Transfering site to Development PC
Hi, I am trying to transfer my school's website onto my laptop to do some work on it.
I tried to restore a backup onto my laptop but there were licence problems for that.
So I cut and pasted my school's licence. I was able to import the backup, but it wouldn't open the CMS Desk.
I deleted the site and the licence, and then I got locked out of the CMS Desk for the localhost website I had originally on my laptop!
The website would run, and I could type in the address for the site manager, but the CMS desk told me to look at a log file.
I have uninstalled everything from my laptop now (Kentico and MS Visual 2008)
Does anyone have a "guide for dummies" that I could follow to import the backup?

I have looked at the forum, and the developers guide seems to be saying how to do move from the development PC to a server which is the other way round for me.

Thanks

RE:Transfering site to Development PC
Hello,

The approach described in our documentation about deploying the site on the life server works in both directions. I am a bit confused why did you have to delete the site from your PC. The steps you've described are correct. Anyway, if you have troubles using the Import/Export module, then you can use the backup/restore approach. For that, you need to manually backup the database and restore it on your laptop. Now you have to copy the whole procet directory to your laptop too. Now just update the connection string in the web.config file to your new database location and everything should be up and running.

RE:Transfering site to Development PC
I tried to import, but I got a little red message talking about licenses.
I eventually deleted it because the site wouldn't work.
Then everything stopped working properly
The version I originally had on my laptop wasn't imported from the school site, but I had developed the CSS and webpart containers on my laptop and I used it to practise before doing stuff on the school site. This stopped working after I had messed about last night.
I think I must have broken something so I will try and do a clean install of everything.

Is it okay if I use my school's licence on my laptop? The free version I was running kept on limiting the number of products for the ecommerce bits. That was one of the reasons for me to try to import the site onto laptop. The other is to fiddle with the checkout process, and I can't do that on the school server as it is in a little air-conditioned "cupboard".

Thanks for the quick response.

RE:Transfering site to Development PC
Hello,

If you are having only licenese issues, please send us an email to support@kentico.com so we can generate development licenses for you. Deleting a site after a license error isn't usually a good approach.
Anyway, importing an exported package should work without problems. Please make just sure, both Kentico instances have the same built number.
And of course, you can use the school's license on your local pc. You don't have to insert a license for the 127.0.0.1 and localhost domain separatebly. If you have a valid license for any domain, just insert it into your Kentico instance and use the two mentioned domains as any other in CMSSiteManager -> Sites -> Domain name.
