What does the new site wizard ACTUALLY do?
I think Kentico is nice, but the documentation is ****

The new site wizard does a bunch of work and all the documentation manages to explain is things like this:

Import files (recommended) - if checked, files will be imported.

Yeah, I got that far. What files? Where do they come from? Where do they go? What's in the files? Can I see them?

This goes for a lot of the options on step 3 (import objects). What ACTUALLY happens?

Import new documents. What documents? Where do they come from? Why does a new site have documents, it;s new, so empty right? The documentation for this:

Import new documents - if checked, documents will be imported

Please, that is NOT documentation. I could autogenerate text like that.

Is there a place we can find REAL documentation?

Thanks!

RE:What does the new site wizard ACTUALLY do?
Hi,

The new site wizard provides you with the new site creation.

If you select to import the files, they are imported - for example the images used on your web site (e.g. when storing files in file system, or when using ASPX templates, web parts files, etc.) The files come from the site export package. The new site wizard is almost the same as the site import.

Importing new documents - again, it is the same as in importing a site, the new documents which are not present are imported to the system.

I would like to recommend you to go through the usertutorial first, to get the meaning how the system works and what its design.

You may be right that the description is too general, but anyone can import any site export package where can be any type of files, so we are not able to specify which files - in general and logically the must must be the files that belong to the site somehow.

RE:What does the new site wizard ACTUALLY do?
But you see where the problem is:

A NEW site can't import images used on the site, it's NEW, there are no images used. Also, what's "new documents that are not present". Again, it's a NEW site, there no documents in it of course (the tree is empty). It makes no sense to me...

The new site wizard is almost the same as the site import.

Impossible, by definition a new site is not almost the same as importing an existing site. A new site is EMPTY, there's nothing to import, no logo, no photos, no home page text, no products. I don't understand this at all.

RE:What does the new site wizard ACTUALLY do?
Hi,

The new site wizard imports an EXISTING site - the files must be present, it cannot create a site only so. You can see that the import files are in \App_Data\Templates\. You are right, this can be mentioned in documentation.

As I mentioned before, the interface is general and it would be more confusing for users if there will be different dialogs for portal engine than for ASPX templates.
When you are creating blank ASPX site, the aspx files are imported.

Moreover, you can create NEW site using wizard where you can select from the sample sites and here are the files.

Moreover, you can create your custom web templates, so the UI needs to be universal.

I hope you understand that the documentation needs to be written in general for all users and for all options. It is not possible to write separate articles for each combination of settings. Many of them are easy to understand and self explaining and as I can see from your post, you were able to get the meaning of the new site creation and how it works when a blank site is created. So, no files were imported - is it bad? Is it an error?
That is the UI in general for all users. If you want to change it, you have the source code of the UI and you can customize it to your need.

RE:What does the new site wizard ACTUALLY do?
Ok, thanks for explaining. I still don't understand, but I will figure it out trying different combinations of the options.

One thing that bothers me is that it seems difficult to get a site without stuff you don't need. Believe it or not, the 100MB of files and 30MB database can be a problem on shared hosting.

Hi,

I understand the hosting restrictions, but to be honest, I would not use such a hosting with this little amount of space. What if you want upload something to your site or add more documents? In these days, 20 or 30MB of database space are not sufficient for web applications.

Here you can find list of our hosting partners. I think many of then have reasonable prices for good services.
