If you are worried about making news with categories, you should not. This can be done using portal engine with no problems. First of all you need to create content tree structure for your news. So, organize your news into categories/folders. Then you can place repeater web part or datalist on your page and configure it to show all of the news. Then you are able to filter out items with query string parameters that is repeater or datalist capable of taking into where condition of this web part.

Second option is to use categories feature which is available in Kentico CMS 4.0 version:
