Is there a way to enable a comments section on something other than a blog document type? For example I would like to be able to publish articles and enable users to comment on those articles. Am I just tied to blog postings for that sort of thing?

Sure ,
You can put the webpart of MessageBoard on your articles. and set the messageboard Visible/Display document "cms.article"

As mentioned above, you can use message boards or also you can use Ad-Hoc forums.
