I used to work as front and back end developer (asp.net/VB), from 2000 to 2009. Life changed and I had to give that up. Now I'm trying to get things going again, but I find myself very much lost.

I made sites for various companies, ranging from static websites to fully fledged HR environment. All based on my own CMS with custom functionalities added per client need. I still have basic programming skills and did keep up with HTML/CSS developments. I've also limited experience with jQuery.

As 'my' CMS is very much outdated, I don't think it's worth spending months (or longer) developing a new one, as there's so much available. But that's exactly where my problem lies: There are so much CMS' available that I feel overwhelmed: SiteCore, mojoportal, Umbraco, Kalico, Kentico, DNN, Drupal, ... I'm not sure what is what and what would be most useful to me.

My goal is to find small/medium sized companies as clients and provide them with a website which they can manage themselves using an easy CMS; I have my own Windows Server with IIS 10/MS SQL. I'm working in VS 2017. My strength is HTML/CSS/DOM; coding-wise I I'm not that good, but more pragmatic: I usually am able to get things working, but probably should be ashamed of my code.

Which CMS would you recommend (and why)?
