Repeater and Selected Item Transformation

I have a repeater on a page that points to a folder full documents of a certain type. Something like this...

Section
-Folder
--Document
--Document
--Document

On the "Section" page, the repeater sits in the template. When I choose a transformation for the selected item, under the repeaters configuration options, nothing is displayed. When I remove it and choose one for the main transformation, all the documents are shown.

How do I display one, singular, document from the list?

It seems if you leave the path option of the repeater blank that Transformation and Select Item Transformation render properly. If you set a content path, the Selected Item Transformation does not render anything. Is that intended behavior for some reason?
