Moving content between mulitple environments
We are evaluating your CMS product and are quite impressed. One of our requirements is a need to have our content follow our code release process, so that we have content originate in development, and move between physically distinct servers until it winds up in production, like so:

Development
Testing
Staging
Production

I'm wondering if you have any suggested best practice to accomplish this using your product.

Re: Moving content between mulitple environments
Hello,

Thank you for this question. Unfortunately, this feature is not supported in Kentico CMS yet. However, we realize that it is very important and we plan to support it in one of the nearest versions (hopefully in March).

Our plan is to allow developers to export selected content, metadata (structure of custom tables, queries, XSL, etc.), workflow and security settings into an export package and import it in another instance of Kentico CMS.

Should you have any other question/suggestion, please post it here or send me an e-mail to petrp@kentico.com.

Best Regards,

Thanks Petr,

We'll be very interested in seeing how you will support this. In the mean time, we may try building something ourselves using the API. Thanks for your quick response.

Re: Moving content between mulitple environments
Hi Petr,
Is this feature implemented yet?
I read something about synchronizing content but nothing about synchronizing meta data.
We need to have our metadata follow our code release process.
Thanks,
Andre

Re: Moving content between mulitple environments
Hi Andre,

Thank you for your message. The current version 1.8 synchronizes only data. We plan to add metadata and database structure synchronization in version 2.0 later this year.

Re: Moving content between mulitple environments
Hi Petr,
I guess I have to apply metadata changes manually then, by entering them into CMS Desk of the staging/producion environments? Or do you have another suggestion?
Thanks,
Andre

Re: Moving content between mulitple environments
HI Andre,

yes, I would recommend you put down the list of changes you made to Document Templates and other settings and repeat them manually through Kentico CMS Desk on the live server when updating your installation.
