WebDAV stands for Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning. It is a set of extensions to the HTTP protocol which allows users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote web servers. WebDAV integration in Kentico CMS enables users to open, edit and save document attachments or documents using the File field (e.g. CMS.File document type) in a client application installed on their local computer (e.g. Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Paint, etc.). The advantage of this approach is that no local copy of the edited document needs to be created and uploaded to the server manually after editing. Saving the document in the client application uploads the new version to the server automatically. This provides a much more straightforward process of editing attached documents, especially for non-experienced or non-technical end users.

WebDAV editing has been integrated into the User contributions and Document library modules, which provides WebDAV editing even to users on the live site. WebDAV editing also fully integrates with workflow and versioning. When there is a workflow defined for a document and it or its attachment is edited using WebDAV, new version of the document is created, check-in/check-out is performed, etc., based on settings of the particular workflow.
