Taking Your Xperience to Stack Overflow

   —

We've all done it, at one point or another, throughout our career. Ok, so I can't speak for everyone, but most of the developers I know have done it and that's use Google to search for an answer to a problem.  But where did you really find your answer, Google, or was it another platform? Most likely you found it, like me, on the largest online community for developers, Stack Overflow.

In case you missed it, Kentico EMS has undergone a rebranding and is now known as Xperience by Kentico and along with a change in name, comes a change in how we find answers to our questions concerning the platform.

This article isn't about the rebranding, but about the changes that are occurring on Stack Overflow as a result of the rebranding. To learn more about the rebranding, take a look at this article by Andy Thompson.

My boss, Petr "Rocky" Svihlik, previously wrote an article on building an online knowledge base for Kentico EMS on Stack Overflow, which talked about how to get started asking and answering questions, as well as, several tips and tricks to be productive on the platform. If you're new to Stack Overflow, I highly recommend reading this article before continuing on, I'll wait 😉.

Introducing a new tag

Rocky talked about one of the keys to being successful on Stack Overflow is to use tags when asking questions because they help categorize the question and provide context with respects to technology, or language, references within the question. With the name change and separation of the product name from the company name, we're introducing a new tag, `kentico-xperience`.

While following the nomenclature set forth with the rebranding of Kentico Kontent, `<company>-<product>`, this new tag will allow experts to quickly identify questions related to the Xperience product increasing the speed and quality of the answers given.

We will begin using the new tag with the next release of Xperience coming later this year.

What about the old tags and questions?

For the past 16 years, the product and company have been synonymous and these questions and answers are an important part of the community you've built on Stack Overflow. As of this writing, there are over 1500 questions on Stack Overflow with the `kentico` tag and who knows how many subscribed to the corresponding RSS feed. The old tags and questions aren't going anywhere. This also includes the version specific tags, like `kentico-11` and `kentico-12`.

After several discussions, we made the decision to not use tag synonyms to replace the existing `kentico` tags, like we did during the rebranding of Kentico Cloud to Kentico Kontent, because it would replace all instances of the `kentico` tag with the new one, `kentico-xperience`.

Summary

Our goal is to make the transition to the new tag as painless as possible, but we know it will take time, especially for those who have been on the platform since the early days. We truly appreciate your effort and support thus far and continued support in the future!

If you have any feedback or suggestions on how we can ease this transition or improve the community, please let us know in the comments below. 😊
