Kentico 8 Upgrade: Update

   —
Kentico 8 has been released and we are working very hard to deliver an upgrade procedure for it. I’m bringing you an update with information regarding the upgrade procedure and the amount of time in which we will still be supporting Kentico 7 in terms of providing hofixes.
Firstly, as I mentioned in my previous post, the release date for the upgrade is the 30th of April, 2014. We will provide you with an upgrade package, a manual with instructions and additional information as well as a database on Devnet portal for API changes. We are also working on a tool that will be able to detect Kentico API calls in your project and tell you how you should change them. In the future, we are planning more improvements regarding the upgrades in order to make the upgrade application painless.

Secondly, we decided to extend the support of Kentico 7 hotfixes. In the past, we had implemented the last hotfix at the time of the release of the upgrade procedure to the newest version. But, we understand that Kentico 8 is a huge change for you, and some of you are not able to upgrade one month after its release. So, we decided to extend the seven-day bug fixing policy for Kentico 7 to the end of July 2014. However, after the upgrade release we will fix only critical issues that are business-related. Also, you will have to make a decision to either:
  1. Apply hotfixes after the upgrade procedure release. If this is the case, then you will have to wait with the upgrade until the last Kentico 7 hotfix release for the updated upgrade procedure. The original upgrade procedure will not work.
  2. Don’t apply hotfixes after the upgrade procedure release (last hotfix you can apply is 7.0.85). You can upgrade to Kentico 8 at any time after the upgrade procedure is released.
Should you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

Hi Peter,
we have extended the period until Kentico 8.1 release - 22th August. See the official announcement here:

http://devnet.kentico.com/articles/kentico-8-1-release-date-announcement

After Kentico 8.1 we will release updated Kentico 8.0 upgrade (for hotfixes beyond 7.0.85).

Hi Jim,

Do you have any information when the latest hotfix will come out for version 7 with which version 8 can be installed? (I am asking it because in the article it was written for end of July 2014.)

Thanks,
Peter

Hi Jim,
updated upgrade for Kentico 8 will be released right after we release Kentico 8.1. We don't have exact date for this update yet but it will be really soon after the release (days or max weeks).

Hi Dominik,

It was my understanding that once Kentico 8.1 will be released in august 2014, a new upgrade procedure for Kentico 7 instances with hotfixes greater than .85 would be released, since after releasing 8.1 the 7 day hotfix policy will end: "Apply hotfixes after the upgrade procedure release. If this is the case, then you will have to wait with the upgrade until the last Kentico 7 hotfix release for the updated upgrade procedure. The original upgrade procedure will not work."
Is this correct? And do you know an estimate of when that updated upgrade procedure will be available?

Kind regards,
