Multi-Server Synchronization with Only One Bi-Directional Server
I'm thinking about setting up Synchronization using a topology that differs from what is shown in the documentation and I want to know if it will work.

We have three servers: Import, Staging, and Production. We will be importing content from our old site into the Import server (we are doing this one department at a time). The new content will be synchronized to the Staging Server. The staging server is where our editors work, adding content and new pages. The staging server then synchronizes to the Production server.

So we only need one bi-directional server. Only the Staging and Production server need to be identical. The Import server will only have the content of the department we are currently importing. Once it's on Staging, it will be deleted from the Import server and then we will import another department.

Import: Source only
Staging: Source and Destination
Production: Source only.

Is this setup possible and reasonable? What would we need to do? If not how would you recommend setting it up?

We want to avoid importing directly to the Staging server in case there is a problem with our import code.

Thanks,
Scott

RE:Multi-Server Synchronization with Only One Bi-Directional Server
Hi,

I do not see any reason why this should not work - you will need to ensure that nothing will overwrite things when staging from import to staging - unless the overwrite is wanted. There is nothing special to be done, just configure the staging and then be just careful what and where are you syncing - most issues are caused that users are syncing content without thinking what and where is being synchronized and then the things are messed up.

RE:Multi-Server Synchronization with Only One Bi-Directional Server
So would I configure it this way?

Import: Set up as a source server per the "Staging Configuration" documentation.

Staging: Set up per the "Simple Bi-directional staging" instructions but leave "Log Staging Changes" checked so the changes can be synchronized with the production server.

Production: Set up as a destination server per the "Staging Configuration" documentation.

Or do I need to do something similar to the Advanced bi-directional staging?

Thanks,
Scott

RE:Multi-Server Synchronization with Only One Bi-Directional Server
Hi,

I would follow just the simple bi-directional staging as you described but keeping on mind the thing I mentioned previously - when staging from the import environment, check whether something already existing on the other two won't be overwritten or changes - rather double check when staging from the import.
